As hard as it is to believe, we are already in the 3rd month of 2008. February in Portland was, as Februarys in Portland tend to be, decidedly spring-like, and the gray skies, rain, and blustery-ness of a true Portland winter seem to have revisited us with the first of this month. Ah, the Ides of March.
We are excited to be writing this newsletter for many reasons: a new employee, gorgeous new yarns, a library of new books, amazing events, and the promise of summer-time knitting.

CRAFT ISSUE 06 RELEASE PARTY
If you are anywhere near Portland this weekend, please come by on Sunday for the CRAFT magazine issue 06 launch party from 1-4pm. It's a great before- or after- Crafty Wonderland stop, with snacks and crafting and yarn and tea, oh, my! CRAFT, if you have yet to see it, is a clever, fun, and fabulous new-ish magazine, all about the crafty lifestyle. The fiesta here in Portland is being co-sponsored by two of Portland's craftiest chicas, Susan Beal (of West Coast Crafty, PDX Supercrafty, and Susan Stars, and author of the new book Bead Simple), and Diane Gilleland (a.k.a. Sister Diane of the Church of Craft, the force behind DIY Alert, and the CraftyPod blog and podcast). Whew! Moxie, who created the insanely fantabulous monsters pictured on the front of CRAFT 06, is heading down from Seattle for some demos, and there will be the hands-on table where you can craft a few of your very own panty-hose flowers as seen in this issue. We also have a ton of projects that are in the magazine in the shop, so you can actually SEE the projects you may choose to MAKE from CRAFT. Did you know that there are project articles from Diane, Susan, and Lee Meredith in this issue of CRAFT? Three amazingly crafty Portland women in one issue of this magazine! Go Portland!

WELCOME, KATE
Now on to something that is just as exciting to us personally, our new employee. If you haven't met Kate yet, please come on by and say HEY! She is our very first employee, and she is fabulous. Kate just moved to Portland after graduating from UC San Diego, and is a confessed Dream in Color addict. She's a fountain of knitting knowledge, and a sweet gal, to boot. Kate is working Saturdays, Sundays, and Tuesdays, and is a great big help to little ole Emily and Shannon. We heart her.

We've got Trekking XXL, Lifestyle, Austermann Step, TOFUtsies, Sockina, Fortissima Socka, Noro Sock, Trekking Pro Natura, Cherry Tree Hill, Dream in Color Smooshy, Zen String, Chewy Spaghetti, Ashabees, Ceyeber Fiber, Yarntini (just a wee bit left of that fab stuff), StitchJones, Knitted Wit, Painted Skeins, Louet Gems, Schaeffer Andrea and Lola... We also just received a shipment of Claudia's Handpaints, a new one to us. And, for those of you who are Socks That Rock addicts, we still have plenty of that left, including the soft and gorgeous STR Silkie! Finally, we have received the "Booby Sock Kits" from Trekking/Skacel. The kit includes a limited-edition Breast-Cancer-Awareness-Pink Trekking yarn, a pattern incorporating a nipple-shaped toe, the Breast Cancer Ribbon, and beads, AND Skacel is donating all net proceeds to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Center. Come on by and snag one of these kits before they are gone, and Knit for the Cure!

NEW BOOKS
Our book and pattern library also continues to grow - we Twisted chicks are both confirmed book addicts (an obsession that definitely enables our fiber frenzy) so it stands to reason that we add more and more and more books to the shop. We've got the old standbys (Stitch and Bitch Handbook, Last Minute Knitted Gifts), the must-haves (Elizabeth Zimmerman - any and all Elizabeth Zimmerman, Barbara Walker, Maggie Righetti), and the obscure. Come on by and spend an afternoon flipping through our book collection - we can almost guarantee that you will find one that absolutely NEEDS to come home with you.

BEAR MITTENS
If you haven't been paying attention to our blog, you may not know that Emily wrote a pattern for something very... interesting. Bear Mittens. Not mittens that look like bear paws for humans, but mittens that are specifically designed for Asian Sun and Moon Bears to wear during surgery. At first glance, this may seem funny, strange, and goofy, but what these poor bears are going through is none of these things. Check out our Bear Mitten page to see what all the fuss is about, download the pattern, watch the story on KGW, see Emily on the news with fabulous hair, and think about doing some charity knitting. It doesn't have to be bear mittens; there are oodles of worthy causes out there - knitting for charity just feels good.

COMING UP
We also have some schedule changes - due to the CRAFT launch party and Easter Sunday, Queer Knitting will be meeting at a different location on the 9th of March, and will not be meeting on Easter at all, and then will be back to normal starting on Sunday, April 6th. Twisted will also be closed on Sunday, March 23, due to the fact that it is Easter, and Emily has an egg-hunting party to attend. Heehee, just kidding. But her dog does look a lot like a bunny. And, really, we will be closed on the 23rd.
We are frantically and diligently working on the class schedule for Spring/Early Summer, so keep your eyes peeled for that. We have some awesome new teachers, some exciting new classes, and some fabulous new projects.
