This shawl was originally published as part of Twisted’s Shawlette Club in November 2011. Now it’s available to everyone either in our shop or on our webstore!

Designed by Chrissy Gardiner of Gardiner Yarn Works.

This nature-inspired shawlette features three different lace leaf motifs and is named after Mt. Mazama, the ancient mountain that exploded to form southwestern Oregon’s spectacular Crater Lake. Your finished object will be just as stunning!

This design has several fun details: a knit-on border, a subtle swallowtail shape with two points at the bottom edge instead of one, and a small peak at the back of the neck. Worked as written, this petite shawlette uses a single skein of sock yarn. However, it can easily be expanded into a full-size shawl with extra yarn simply by adding additional pattern repeats.

The honeycomb cables in these mittens were initially inspired by the warm tones of the Wheat Heather colorway of Imperial Stock Ranch’s wonderfully soft yet rustic Columbia yarn. From there, well, all the pieces fell quickly into place…

The title, Apis Mellifera, is the scientific term for the Western Honeybee. It is also the root of the name ‘Melissa’, which means ‘honeybee’, and happens to be my mom’s name!

So, these mittens are a tribute to one of my favorite yarns (which inspired the cables), my favorite month of the year (October, when I was born and when I’m publishing this pattern), and the woman who brought me into this world and taught me to love and respect our honeybees. Enjoy!

I’m going to do a bit of self-publicizing now, because I’ve had four new patterns come out in the last week or so, patterns that for whatever reason took forever to get ready for prime time. These are a great gift for your knitterly friends, either as a gift of the pattern, or to actually knit. I’m super excited about these – they are all easy, quick and wearable. If you click on the photos, you’ll be taken to our website, where you can purchase hard copies of all the patterns, but if you’d rather have or gift electronic versions, head on over to Ravelry, where you can get electronic versions of any Twisted pattern.

You’ll feel wise indeed draped in Sesheta, a triangular shawl with an open mesh lace pattern. Named for the Egyptian goddess of knowledge, writing and mathematics, Sesheta displays strong geometric symbols, with triangle and pinwheel designs down the spine and around the hem. Knit from side to side, this lacy shawl only takes one skein of yarn to complete, allowing you to make intelligent use of your stash!

About the Designer – Working under the label Stick Chick Knits, Mel spends her days in Seattle dreaming up new designs and playing with yarn. Her projects expand to fill the space available. Luckily, this doesn’t seem to bother her loving husband and sons.

Now available! The Good Neighbors Scarf, designed by: Shannon Squire

This pattern was originally released in August as part of Twisted’s Single Skein Club.

This light and airy scarf reminds us of picket fences and neatly pruned boxwood hedges on, let’s just say, a bucolic country lane in a Jane Austen novel. Beads on each edge give it the pleasant sparkle of conversation with neighbors met on a balmy summer evening’s stroll.

Or, if we snap back to reality, it calls to mind our own more… dynamic… city backyards. In summer that’s where we play and eat and cook and garden and nap and generally do everything we can. Being packed in somewhat more tightly together than the refined landed gentry of Victorian England, we find ourselves thinking that the only thing lovelier than a nice, solid fence is this handsome scarf!
It’s this fantastically fat, soft, lofty, light fiber that is squishy and warm and just plain lovely. It’s a blend of 98% Merino Wool and 2% Nylon, and instead of being plied, it’s cabled, which allows it to be light as air. Ushya‘s gauge is 2-2.5 stitches per inch, and for $18, you get a whopping 114 yards (100 grams).

I’ve also designed a super-quick and easy cowl to use just one skein of this – the perfect last-minute gift this holiday season, and the pattern is free with purchase of the yarn. It’s called the Springy Sproingy Cowl, and it really really is.
