movie night tonight

Posted by Shannon in events, movie night

the movie tonight, who framed roger rabbit?, was quite the wave-maker in the day, blending live-action and cartoon characters, and even featuring characters from several animation studios. it is also the last major voice role for legendary mel blanc, who passed away shortly after the film was made. fittingly enough, wikipedia tells us that several “easter eggs” were placed into the film. an easter egg, in this sense of the word, is not something the easter bunny lays, but an intentional hidden message.

as imdb states, “It’s the story of a man, a woman, and a rabbit in a triangle of trouble.” and “‘Toon star Roger is worried that his wife Jessica is playing pattycake with someone else, so the studio hires detective Eddie Valiant to snoop on her. But the stakes are quickly raised when Marvin Acme is found dead and Roger is the prime suspect.”

movie night tonight

Unfortunately, our planned movie, Raising Arizona, is MIA in DVD format in the greater NE/SE metro area. So, we’re substituting based on what was in Emily’s house… Bottle Rocket! How can you say no to both Wilson brothers in one movie? You can’t.

movie night tonight, UPDATED

Posted by Shannon in events, movie night

whoops! well, due to the fact that NOT ONE VIDEO STORE IN PORTLAND HAS THE MOVIE GLEAMING THE CUBE ON DVD, we are going to switch things up a bit in the 11th-hour. if someone, anyone, out there (within 10 miles of the shop) owns this movie, and wouldn’t be opposed to us borrowing it, give us a call at 503.922.1150. otherwise, we are going to go with an even more classic christian slater flick, heathers. according to imdb: “A girl who half-heartedly tries to be part of the “in crowd” of her school meets a rebel who teaches her a more devious way to play social politics.”

200px-heathers.jpg

again, folks, christian slater, winona rider, shannen dougherty (yeah, the brat from 90210), high school, cool kids, uncool kids, and a bit of murder thrown in. what more could you ask for on a friday night?

movie night tonight

Posted by Shannon in events, movie night

according to imdb, the tagline for tonight’s movie, Mr. Mom, is “When mom goes to work, dad goes berserk!”

200px-mr_mom_poster.jpg
“The film stars Michael Keaton and Teri Garr as Jack and Caroline Butler, a middle class couple with three kids living in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan, struggling to make ends meet. Jack loses his engineering job at an automobile manufacturer. Though the auto industry is in a slump, they bet that Jack can get a job before Caroline, but Jack loses as Caroline gets hired by an ad agency and he has to stay at home with the kids.”(from wikipedia) after that, hilarity, of course, ensues.

movie night tonight and a super-bowl sunday update

Posted by Shannon in events, movie night

200px-mannequin_movie_poster.jpgthe movie tonight is one of my very favorite 80’s flicks, not only because it stars the affable andrew mccarthy and the sexy-in-the-city kim cattrall, and not only because starship’s ‘nothing’s gonna stop us now‘ is one of the main songs on the soundtrack, and not only because it’s sweet and goofy, and not only because it is completely and utterly implausable, and not only because it’s a sweet cinderella-type love story, but because i watched this movie so many times as a youngster, and smile just thinking about it.

so come on down to twisted tonight and watch mannequin with us. it really does have all the hallmarks of a great 80’s movie - the hair, the clothes, the goofy dialogue, the token bad-guys. oh, and hollywood montrose, the hero’s best friend.

200px-nottinghillrobertsgrant.jpgwe have also (finally) picked the movie for our superbowl sunday non-superbowl get-away from football fiesta! we wanted to do a chick-flick, and are in love with hugh grant for his ability to play the same exact character (whom we heart) in every good film he has ever been in, so in a spur-of-the-moment decision yesterday, we decided to show notting hill. really, folks, what could be better than our own sweet hugh grant, teamed up with the uber-chick-flick chick, julia roberts? yeehawww!!!

movie night tonight, starring the two coreys

Posted by Shannon in events, movie night

200px-license_to_drive_poster.PNGyep, you got that right - corey haim and corey feldman will be gracing our screen with their best team-up ever, license to drive. a synopsis from rotten tomatoes: “Les (Corey Haim) is about to go through one of the most important adolescent rites-of-passage: He’s all set to take his driver’s license exam. And Les had better pass, cause his younger buddies are depending on him to free them from the onerous malady of parental vehicular dependency. Adding to his pressure is his hot date with Mercedes (Heather Graham), a super-babe, that Les has lied his way into. Les fails the test. But he’s not discouraged because when you haven’t got it, you can fake it! So he steals his grandfather’s near-vintage, baby-blue caddy that’s just back from the shop. Once the wheels are out on the road, it’s no turning back for the teens on the town. Too bad everything that could go wrong does go wrong, as Les’s cool evening out becomes his worst nightmare.”

the two coreys were quite the hot commodity back in the day - they starred in many movies together, including dream a little dream and the lost boys. they were teen heartthrobs, particularly that yummy corey haim, and in a fit of “let’s continue to capitalize on our former glory,” they even teamed up for a reality-type show, the two coreys, which i never saw, or heard of, until doing a bit of research for this blog post. i did find a comment on imdb that states, simply, “not terrible.” in the spirit of exciting those who saw license to drive when it first came out, here is a recent photo of the two coreys:

i leave it to you to decide if they have aged well or not. i vote for not so much…

movie night tonight and some new stuff

Posted by Shannon in yarn, events, movie night

tonight’s movie is a classic. at least, to me, it’s a classic. the more i talk to folks about this movie, the more i realize that not many people have heard of it, let alone have actually seen it. it’s a great movie, though, at least my memory tells me it’s a great movie. come on by tonight to check it out yourself, and tell me, is it a great movie? starring jon cryer, aka duckie from pretty in pink, it can’t NOT be a great movie, right? i do know that jon cryer is now in a sit-com, which i personally have only seen a few times, but was not super-impressed with…

hidingout.jpg

any-hoo, the movie is hiding out. it came out in 1987. it stars jon cryer. he has punk-rock 80s hair. he’s a stockbroker hiding from the mob by going back to high school. the tagline on imdb reads: “There’s only one thing more frightening than murder: High School.” how can you go wrong?

now, new products. yeehaww! we expect to continue to receive exciting new yarns and books here at twisted. there are many that we are insanely excited about. we’ll keep you posted as they trickle in, but the newest of the new include dream in color classy (worsted) and smooshy (sock) in the brand-spanking new colorline. we also have some of the dream in color fatty, which is tre fabu - it’s like big, soft, fluffy ropes! we heart it! new dream in color colorways include flamingo pie, butter peeps, and punky fuschia.

knittingwithouttears.jpgwe have also received the book that has become one of the gold standards in knitting: elizabeth zimmermann’s knitting without tears. sick of seaming? purling? this is the book for you. elizabeth was a knitting pioneer, and this is her guide to freeing your knitting, to allowing the knitter to create gorgeous sweaters in a circular manner, with no worries, and, hopefully, no tears.

movie night tonight

150px-spinal_tap_logo.jpg
the mock-rockumentary “this is spinal tap” has really become something of a phenomena in both rock and film history. a fictitious band, spinal tap, has become a living, breathing entity, “reuniting” for concerts (liveaid) and appearances on such shows as saturday night live and the simpsons. there is even an “unofficial” fan site, whose content is completely based on the fact that spinal tap is real. come to twisted this friday to see what all that fuss is about. or just come to laugh at the genius that occurs when corky, lenny, ned flanders, and meathead get together to create something fake, that seems real, and is all about being hilarious. check out this excerpt from wikipedia: “This Is Spinal Tap was only a modest success upon its initial release, suffering from, among other things, the failure of many viewers to understand that it was not a real documentary. Audience feedback cards from early screenings had comments such as “Too shaky. Get new cameraman.” However, the film found greater success, and a cult following, after it was released on video.”
