Upcoming classes
Posted by Emily in classesThere are three very cool classes coming up next week that still have spots open in them!
Altering Patterns, taught by the lovely and talented Kate, is next Thursday, May 15 from 6-8pm. This class will cover adjusting patterns to do all those things we knitters find ourselves wanting to do - like use a different weight of yarn than the pattern calls for or to accommodate a larger bust size, for example. It’s a little bit math, a little bit creative flair, and a little bit rock-and-roll. $20.
Crochet Flowers, taught by debonair Dr. Elaine, is a learn to crochet class that will get you started in the craft by making adorable little flower embellishments. No prior crochet knowledge needed - covers chain, single and double crochet. Come check it out next Saturday, May 17 from 12-3pm. $30, plus $5 materials fee.
Entrelac, taught by Dawn from Fiber Rhythm Craft and Design, is your entry into this looks-harder-than-it-really-is technique. Best of all, the class project can be used to make a cute purse. Sunday, May 18 from 2:30 - 5:30pm. $30.

Rusted Root Mania
Posted by Emily in classesJump on the Rusted Root bandwagon! This is definitely the hottest summer shirt pattern we’ve been selling lately. Shannon did it in Cathay. Parna’s got it in progress in Pure Cotton. I’ve got it queued in Euroflax… wait Prima… wait Soya Cotton… errrm…
Anyway, whatever yarn you knit it in, the pattern’s written by Portland’s own Zephyr Style gals. It’s knit from the top down so there’s, say it with me, no seaming. And you can try it on as you go so the fit is sure to be perfection even if your gauge isn’t. The break between the second and third classes gives you plenty of time to work on the body. If you’re feeling up to it, there’s a lace panel down the front. If you’re looking for something simpler, you can just go with the plain white (or orange, purple, green, etc.) T look.
Sundays, June 1, 8, 29, 3:00 – 5:00 pm.

$60
Materials: Worsted weight yarn (5 sts/inch), 24” circular needles in size necessary to obtain gauge.
Includes: Zephyr Style Rusted Root pattern.
Skills learned: Raglan sleeves, basic lace if desired.

Leethal’s short row wavy hat
Posted by Emily in classesLocal blogger, indy zine author and all around crafty chica Lee Meredith is joining our teaching roster in May. She’ll be teaching a two-part class on her very own hat pattern called Leethal’s Short-Rows Wavy Hat.
If you thought hats were boring think again! Lee’s hat is knit flat from side to side (not bottom to top) using short rows for shaping and increasing and decreasing to create spiraling stripes. We have it listed at the intermediate level, but it would be appropriate for an adventurous advanced beginner, too. The dates to mark your calendar for are May 4 and 11 from 2:30 - 4:30 pm. $40. Give us a call to register - 503.922.1150.

Happy Earth Day!
Posted by Emily in classes, crochetOur gal Michelle came in the other day with a great class idea, that is just perfect to announce on Earth Day. It’s a purse crocheted out of old grocery bags!

The class is a “beginner” level since it requires only minimal crochet skills - single crochet, increase and decrease only. You’ll learn how to cut up plastic grocery bags and connect them together to make “yarn,” as well as how to follow a simple crochet pattern. The class is Sunday, July 20 from 2:30 – 4:30 pm and costs $20. Materials are 30 plastic grocery bags (BYO) and a size N plastic or metal crochet hook (not wood).

Cast on
Posted by Emily in classesSo, are you busy tomorrow? No? Well, perfect then. We still have a spot open in a neat new workshop with our gal Parna Sunday from 2:30 - 4:30.
The subject is casting on. There are about as many ways to cast on as there are dog breeds. And, when you think about it, you’re only casting on once a project, so there’s just not as much chance to practice as there is with other aspects of knitting.
Long tail, backwards loop, knit, cable, provisional… Have you ever seen these terms and not known how to do them? Or wondered when to use one over another? Well then the Casting On workshop is just the ticket! You’ll learn a few of the most common cast-on methods and their pros and cons.
If this sounds up your alley, just give us a call at 503.922.1150 to sign up!

New class schedule
Posted by Emily in classesIt’s finally here! The Spring/Summer ‘08 Twisted class schedule. We’ve got some great new classes on the way, which we’ll be blogging about more in upcoming days. There’s too much to put all in just one post.
Also, I want to throw out there that there is still one spot open in the Intro to Lace class scheduled for next Saturday from 11:30am - 1:30pm. This is one of our most popular classes, so it’s unusual to have any openings left so close to the class. If you’ve been pondering learning lace and figured the class was full, just give us a call and register! It’s $20 and taught by the lovely and talented Ms. Michelle Molis using her wildly popular Japanese Vines scarf pattern.

There are also spots open in another great class next weekend - Dawn Seymour’s Entrelac Workshop. People who have taken this class in the past have gotten incredibly hooked on Entrelac (ahem, Ann!). It’s a fun technique that isn’t as terrifying as it looks at first when you see someone with a needle full of little tiny triangles. This class is Sunday from 2:30 - 5:30pm and costs $30.

Cable class
Posted by Emily in classesHowdy, all. Just wanted to plant the notion in your head that there are still two spots open in this Saturday’s Learn to Cable Workshop. If you’ve been wanting to learn to cable and just haven’t gotten around to jumping in to it alone, let our fantastic teacher Parna help you out.
With permission from the author, our class is using the Coronet hat pattern by Alexandra Virgiel, which you may have seen in the Winter 2003 issue of Knitty. This is her photo, from Knitty, below.
In class you’ll create the simple and elegant braid-like cabled brim. You can then turn that into a headband or go on and finish the hat according to the pattern directions. I made it once in a smaller yarn so that it came out sized for a baby. So cute! If you’re interested in this class, just give us a call to register 503-922-1150.
Saturday, February 9. 12:00 – 2:00 pm.
with Parna Mehrbani
$20
Materials: Apprx 190 yards heavy worsted/aran weight yarn and needles necessary to obtain gauge.

Art felt
Posted by Emily in classes, feltingSo, a quick word about a class we have coming up in March that I am seriously psyched about. Artfelt ™ is a fairly new technique that uses fine merino wool roving from Skacel and their magical “easy felt” paper. It’s is a bit like needle felting and wet felting, but requires far less time (and dare I say talent) than either of the those!
Each kit contains enough roving (in a whole variety of gorgeous, wonderful, inspiring colors) and easy felt paper to make either a scarf, several pillows or a purse. It also contains two barbed needles, one plastic sheet for felting and an instructional slide show DVD. You just cut your paper, lay out your roving, saturate your work with water, roll it up in the plastic and pop it in the dryer. The tumbling and heat of the dryer magically felts your piece.

Our class is being taught by Joanne, our Skacel representative and, trust us, an Artfelt ™ master! It’s Saturday, March 1 from 9am - 12 noon. The class is $20 and the kit is $45. This class is going to be so fun that we scheduled it before normal business hours so that both Shannon and I can take it! One of those benefits of being the boss…
To sign up, just stop by or call us at 503-922-1150. Check out all our other classes here.

New Pathways sock class update!
Posted by Emily in socks, classesWe wanted to let everyone know that we’ve changed the details of the class covering Cat Bordhi’s Bartholomew’s Tantalizing Socks. This class focuses on the popular cuff-down pattern from Cat’s New Pathways for Sock Knitters book.

The socks are incredible and gorgeous but, just as importantly, this class will be a great intro to Cat’s book. According to even some accomplished sock knitters New Pathways can be daunting to work through at first. This class will help you decipher Cat’s revolutionary “sockitecture” and get over your jitters tackling her mind-blowing patterns. Definitely for those already familiar with the fundamentals of sock knitting!
Saturdays, January 26, 11:00 – 1:30 pm. February 2, 16, 23. 11:00 – 1:00 pm. (Note: no class Feb 9)
with Leslie Cumming
$80
Materials: New Pathways for Sock Knitters by Cat Bordhi, 380 yards sport weight yarn, circular or double-pointed needles necessary to obtain gauge, stitch markers.
