New Teas
Posted by Emily in tea and treatsWe have a bevy of new teas here at Twisted:
Green Pekoe
Peach Oolong
Raspberry Herbal
Raspberry Black
Cinnamon Black
Orange Black
Cream Black
Apple Black
Check out our complete updated tea list.
In addition to these, we are very, very dorky - I mean excited - to introduce three blends we found on the Adagio site that honor two of our current TV/video blog favorites.
Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog, for those of you not sufficiently geeky to have gotten the memo this already, is the newest offering from Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon, starring the incomparable Neil Patrick Harris as an aspiring super-villain and Nathan Fillion as the superhero, Capt. Hammer, who keeps beating him up and steals his girl to boot.
From Adagio’s site:
Dr. Horrible’s Tea of Evil - “A tea as dark as the Dr.’s heart. This black tea is highlighted with berry blues and a hint of vanilla in honor of the frozen yogurt he shares with his love. May be served with or without sweatener. Honey makes a perfect compliment to this tea.”
Capt. Hammer’s Corporate Tool Tea - “An over-the-top hero, like the Captain, needs a patriotic tea. But this black tea is over-the-top too with apple, caramel and cream. Think of it as a gooey apple pie for our hunky, cheesy hero!”
Battlestar Galactica, on the other hand, is the story of a small remnant of humanity’s desperate flight from the cyborgs who obliterated their home worlds. Very cheery. FYI, it stars local Portlander Katee Sackhoff as Capt. Kara “Starbuck” Thrace. This one is dedicated to Wil H.
From Adagio:
Battlestar Galactica - “War with a cybernetic race, laced with the passion to survive.” Made of Gunpowder green tea, apple, passionfruit.

Knit Graffiti, Yarn Bombing, and Little Plastic Horses
Posted by Shannon in eventsMost Portlanders have noticed the wee plastic horses chained to rings in the sidewalk all around town. You see them, you giggle, you say to yourself: “Only in Portland!” But, did you know that this was actually an art project? That one man spearheaded the whole thing, and there are photo sites devoted to these funky little things! And Shawn Bowman and the PNCA are taking it one step further, by incorporating knitting into the wonderful world of the little horses.

For Art in the Pearl, PNCA’s Continuing Education outreach table is hosting an activity which combines this simple knit, guerilla/community art and interactive media with another Portland arts phenomenon, the little horses. At the outreach table, kids and adults will be crafting legwarmers, blankets, yarn garlands and hats for the horses using finger knitting and easy spool techniques.
Twisted has donated some yarn to this fun, funky, and oh-so-Portland happening. Join Shawn and the rest of the gang on Sunday August 31st on the the corner of NW 8th and NW Davis any time between 10am and 6pm to get in on the fun - everyone can make a little something-something for that special Little Plastic Horse in their life!

New swift
Posted by Emily in the shopWe’ve got a new swift joining the family here at Twisted. We’ve long had the fantastic and versatile large wooden swift at $75. This works with every possible size skein of yarn and is lacquered and gorgeous.

Now we also have a smaller metal and plastic version made by KM for only $50. This great swift features metal parts covered with smooth plastic to prevent unwanted snags. It folds up into a thin box, making it ideal for cramped quarters or travel. And the price is nice for knitters on a budget!

Knitting Idol Week at Twisted
Posted by Shannon in the shop, knitting
One day last week, one of our regulars came in. Her name is Betsy McCarthy, and she’s a knitting celeb. She wrote the book Knit Socks! which, coincidentally, I first learned how to knit socks from. I have fawned over her many times - really, it’s because of her book that I was able to make my first few pairs of socks, the very first of which S still wears, even though they are huge, thick, and pink, brown, and green. They are his absolute favorite bumming-around-the-house socks. I also made a great striped pair for my dad, out of non-superwash wool, which went and got themselves felted. Ah, well.
So, anyway, in comes Betsy, with a friend I hadn’t met before. It was fairly busy, so it was a while before I could greet them fully, and when I did, who should this friend be, but Evelyn Clark! OMG! Evelyn Clark is my lace knitting guru. It is because of Evelyn Clark’s neck-down triangular shawls that I had a full-blown addiction to lace a few years ago. That I made 3 lace-weight Shetland Triangle shawls for my wedding, and then made a sock-yarn Shetland Triangle (pictured below). That I am able to encourage others to tackle lace, because, frankly, it’s just Not That Hard.

After making a bit of a fool out of myself by telling them how much of a knitting inspiration they both have been, I asked if I could take a photo for the blog. They acquiesced, because both are truly lovely women, and, without further ado, here’s a photo of two of my knitting heroines!

And, just so you know, we carry Betsy’s book, and a whole MESS of Evelyn’s patterns here at Twisted. We even have two of Evelyn’s shawls made up in the shop for inspiration! The Great Wall of Sock Yarn can help with projects inspired by both ladies - sock yarn works great for, obviously, the sock patterns in Betsy’s book, but also for Evelyn’s shawls.
