book review: drunk, divorced, and covered in cat hair
Posted by Shannon in booksemily is a genius. she really is. (but you all already knew that, didn’t you?) she came up with the idea for book reviews, and, since i just finished a book we recently got in the shop, i’ll get this party started.
laurie perry, aka crazy aunt purl, is the kind of woman you just plain want to be friends with. she’s smart, funny, self-depreciating without being self-loathing, and very, very honest. her fabulous, sweet, funny, and sometimes-sad memoir about getting dumped and bouncing back, knitting needles in hand, is a great read. she has a way of writing that makes you feel as though you are in the room with her, drinking coffee (or wine), best friends forever, laughing and crying about life.
in 2005, laurie started blogging about her life post-marriage, and that blog grew into the kind of memoir that even non-knitters will love. need a little something to pass the time when your hands need a break from knitting? read this book! you won’t be sorry.

Why I Knit
Posted by Shannon in the shop, eventswhy do you knit? to center yourself? to create something one-of-a-kind and beautiful? to spend time with others? to be alone? to feed that need inside? one of our wonderful customers-slash-friends-slash-vendors, laurie-ann, has begun work on a project called “Why I Knit.” she has started a blog, and has dropped off a fabulous ‘add-to-it-anytime’ journal here - it’s sitting on the coffee table, so come on by, read why others knit, and add your own story. we’ll be working with her on an event around mother’s day, because so many of us knit with our moms (in fact, mine was just in town, and we spent many hours knitting together and visiting. dad was here, too, but he opted not to knit with us :)). keep your eyes peeled for information on that and other fun events coming up here at twisted.

New class schedule
Posted by Emily in classesIt’s finally here! The Spring/Summer ‘08 Twisted class schedule. We’ve got some great new classes on the way, which we’ll be blogging about more in upcoming days. There’s too much to put all in just one post.
Also, I want to throw out there that there is still one spot open in the Intro to Lace class scheduled for next Saturday from 11:30am - 1:30pm. This is one of our most popular classes, so it’s unusual to have any openings left so close to the class. If you’ve been pondering learning lace and figured the class was full, just give us a call and register! It’s $20 and taught by the lovely and talented Ms. Michelle Molis using her wildly popular Japanese Vines scarf pattern.

There are also spots open in another great class next weekend - Dawn Seymour’s Entrelac Workshop. People who have taken this class in the past have gotten incredibly hooked on Entrelac (ahem, Ann!). It’s a fun technique that isn’t as terrifying as it looks at first when you see someone with a needle full of little tiny triangles. This class is Sunday from 2:30 - 5:30pm and costs $30.

Closed for Easter
Posted by Emily in the shopWe’ll be closed on Sunday, March 23 to celebrate Easter with our families. We’ll reopen as usual on Tuesday morning at 11am. Thanks for understanding!

This photo of two especially cute Easter bunnies is from the website of my favorite charity, the French Bulldog Rescue Network.

movie night tonight
Posted by Shannon in events, movie nightthe movie tonight, who framed roger rabbit?, was quite the wave-maker in the day, blending live-action and cartoon characters, and even featuring characters from several animation studios. it is also the last major voice role for legendary mel blanc, who passed away shortly after the film was made. fittingly enough, wikipedia tells us that several “easter eggs” were placed into the film. an easter egg, in this sense of the word, is not something the easter bunny lays, but an intentional hidden message.

as imdb states, “It’s the story of a man, a woman, and a rabbit in a triangle of trouble.” and “‘Toon star Roger is worried that his wife Jessica is playing pattycake with someone else, so the studio hires detective Eddie Valiant to snoop on her. But the stakes are quickly raised when Marvin Acme is found dead and Roger is the prime suspect.”

SUMMERTIME! (well, almost)
Posted by Shannon in the shop, yarnalright, so we’ll be the first to admit that the weather in portland has been decidedly UN-summery, but you can feel it in the air, can’t you? warmer weather is on its way. the flowers are popping up all over town, the cherry trees are in full blossom, and the knitterly mind wanders to more light-weight dreams. in honor of these dreams, twisted has received some fabulous summer-knitting yarns. two of our new favorites are Debbie Bliss’ Prima, and Sublime’s Soya.
Prima is an 80% Bamboo, 20% Merino Wool blend with an amazing sheen. it’s a dk-weight yarn, and, as is usual with miss debbie bliss, the pattern support is pretty phenomenal. we’ve got 16 bright and happy colors, so come on in, pet some prima, and cast on your first summery sweater today - remember, the warm-weather season here is super-duper short, so make sure to start now, or you’ll have to wait till next summer to wear it :0) heehee!
Soya is Sublime’s newest yarn - it’s a 50/50 soy/cotton blend, with Sublime’s typical classically-understated yet elegant palate. soya is a dk-weight yarn as well, and the pattern book has the cutest lil sweaters for woman, man, and child. we’ve got all 10 colors of this new yarn - with names like ‘pomegranate,’ ‘nettle,’ and ‘noodle,’ you really can’t go wrong.
