In regards to your possum yarn. The possum used in Zealana yarns is NOT the same creature you see wandering around Portland and other parts of the US. It is an Australian possum that was introducted to New Zealand for the fur industry many years ago. Since it has no natural enemies in New Zealand, the Australan possum has multiplied to the point it is an environmental threat to the native flora and fauna. It is considered public enemy No. 1 to those in NZ who wish to preserve the native bush. These possums look considerably different than the US possum and come in several colors like black, grey and red.
When buying possum yarns, knitters are helping to preserve the natural habitat of NZs unusual native birds, many of which are threatened and endangered.
