A little bootie

Posted by Emily in yarn

These booties were fast and easy to knit up. The construction is clever and keeps things entertaining but not confusing. Add some Peter Rabbit buttons and it’s a winner.

the great swatch project

Posted by Shannon in yarn

twisted has made its first few major yarn orders, and has received a big ole box of “samples,” which are destined to be knit into swatches for the store (by the way, receiving a box full of different kinds of yarn? insanely exciting. what’s it going to be like when we start receiving our actual orders????) emily and i did the grade-school-kickball-team way of choosing yarn - one at a time, we could pick our faves, until all that was left was the plain, basic wool (i.e. the non-athletic, uncoordinated wanna-be kickballer). one of my first picks was noro’s silk garden lite. yummy. i have always been a silk garden fan; in fact, i have a season of multidirectional scarves in sg under my belt, and as i sat and fondled the yarn, i remembered one of the many projects on my own personal wish-list, lady eleanor from scarf style. i have seen many of these around blog-land in sg, and they are uber-lovely, so i decided not only to make an awe-inspiring swatch, but to learn a new technique while at it.

oh, and, by the way?

ENTRELAC IS AMAZING.

i used almost a full skein of sg lite, and was able to do 2 complete pattern repeats, as well as the finishing rows. what a fab little swatch.

one of these days, i will make an entire stole for myself…

Where is Twisted?

Posted by Shannon in the shop

Twisted is located at 2310 NE Broadway, in the Irvington-Sullivan’s Gulch neighborhood of Portland. Twisted has brown paper on the windows, and a heck of a lot of tools laying around inside. Twisted is a bit dusty right now. Twisted is a lovely space, with big old wonderful windows that look out on the vibrant and pedestrian-friendly Broadway Avenue. Twisted is next door to the Rose and Thistle, a Portland institution, and down the street from Costello’s Travel Cafe. Twisted is a work-in-progress, and will be opening in May 2007.

Why is Twisted?

Posted by Emily in the shop

Twisted exists (and we’re boldly using the present tense now instead of future!) for a few reasons.  Most fundamentally, we both love knitting and crafts.  We want to surround ourselves with crafts and to share our excitement with other people.  It’s a good feeling to use your hands and brain to make something tangible in this electronic world.  And often with crafts, you end up making not just works of art, but friends along the way.  That’s the other part of why we started Twisted.  Family and friends are the most important thing there is, and a job should just be a means to and end - being able to enjoy them and be there for them.

Carat in the oxygen boxAll this comes up now because my dear sweet angelic French Bulldog, Carat, got very sick with pneumonia.  She was in the doggie hospital, in a little oxygen box no less, and just got to come home last night.  Right now I couldn’t think about anything else if I tried to.  I can’t even knit!  Now that’s serious.  All I did today was snuggle with Carat on the sofa and nurse her back to health.  And did I have a boss I had to lie to and say I was sick?  No.  Did I have a system that was telling me this wasn’t really an emergency because it was “just” my dog?  No.  I had my fabulous partner Shannon on the other end of the phone, worried for my pup and willing to do whatever it took to give me time to take care of her.

This is why Twisted is!  Because life is about things that make us feel good, like flexing our creativity, loving a dog, and knowing we have family and friends who understand us.
